Beyond The Basics-Preparing For Disaster

(Last Updated On: October 29, 2019)

The goal in all our planning and preparing for disaster, is to have the least amount of hardships and changes to our lifestyle as possible should a disaster actually happen.

Prepping is like insurance. We hope nothing bad will ever happen, but we buy insurance to limit the hardships our family could face if the unexpected happens.
There are thousands of things we can do as preppers when we talk about preparing for emergencies and disasters. So let’s get started.

Cover The Essentials First

There are 4 areas we must make sure we have covered first just to make sure we survive any disaster. These 4 areas are often referred to as: The Survival Rules of 3.

  1. First aid or medical attention. Not being able to breathe or severe loss of blood can result in death within 3 minutes.
  2. Shelter. You must protect your body from physical danger and harsh environments or you could lose your life within 3 hours. (For example, getting soaked in a rain storm on a cool day could result in hypothermia within a few hours.)
  3. Water. We can’t survive without safe water for more than about 3 days.
  4. Food. We won’t survive for more than about 3 weeks without food.

If you haven’t already started getting these covered in your disaster preparations, go back and follow the suggestions in those articles, before going on to the advanced disaster preparations.

Once the basic essentials to survival are covered, we can begin advanced disaster preparations in many other areas.

There is no one special area to start with. Each of them will depend on your special circumstances. The best way to start will be to determine what emergencies, disasters, or other hardships could possibly affect you and your family. Then go through all these different areas to see what you can do to prepare for them.

Don’t feel that you have to get everything done at once. It’s really a never ending process. Being a prepper is just a lifestyle of always trying to get a little better prepared for what life may throw at us. I’m constantly finding new things I can do to better prepare me and my family. As I find and do the research on these, I just keep adding them to this site to help you prepare better as well.
