Emergency Water filtration-Keeping your drinking water safe

In any kind of emergency, disaster, or survival situation, having safe drinking water is probably one of the most important things you will need. Even after the disaster has passed, it is often quite some time before a safe water supply is again available. Getting sick from contaminated water can cause more deaths than the actual disaster itself!

Because we can survive only about 3 days without water, and we need approximately a gallon of water per person per day, we are not able to carry all the water we need. We are going to need to find the best emergency water filters available to supply the water we need. Below are many of the top filters available.

Filtration vs. Disinfection/purification

There is a difference between water filtration and water disinfection or purification.  Most good water filters will filter particulates down to about 0.1 – 0.2 microns to remove the protozoa (Giardia lamblia & Cryptosporidium parvum) and most bacteria that can cause sickness.

To totally disinfect water to remove most viruses too small to be filtered, iodine or chlorine is usually used. Boiling water will also kill these viruses. This is especially important in less developed countries where viruses are more prevalent.

Because these filters will remove such small particles (as small as 0.1 microns), they will also clog up quickly if the water is heavy with sediment and other larger contaminants. It is best to filter out these larger particles by initially running the water through a filter like a coffee filter, a sand/charcoal filtering medium, or even a cloth (shirt or bandana). If time is available, you can often allow the water to sit for awhile to let the particles settle to the bottom and pour off the clearer water from the top.

Backup redundancy

Always have several backup methods of purifying your water. Don’t depend on one filter or only one method of purifying your water. Should that system break or fail, you want to have backups!
